I love using Sunday as a self-care day to regroup from the previous week and prepare for the upcoming one. Here are 12 ideas to show yourself some self-love this weekend without spending a dime.

12 Ways to Upgrade Your Self-Care Sunday for Free - Kyra Cosman

1. Start your day with a healthy breakfast

I find that breakfast sets the tone for the whole day. I love starting the day with a healthy and nutritious meal to make sure I’m starting off on the right foot. Take advantage of the extra time in the morning by making a smoothie bowl, healthy pancakes, or an omelette. It’ll probably be a nice change from your usual weekday breakfast.

2. Make yourself a fancy tea or coffee

Since it’s the weekend, and you have a bit more time, try making yourself a fancy coffee or tea to start the day. Try making a coconut milk latte, Chai tea latte, or even a ginger turmeric latte. Drink it slowly and enjoy every sip.

3. Go for a long walk

In my opinion, fresh air is the ultimate way to up your self-care. I instantly feel better after going for a nice long walk outside. You could mix it up and head to a new walking or hiking trail or just do a relaxing loop around your neighbourhood.

4. Do a face mask

I love any excuse to do a face mask. I find that I’m always more rushed during the week and I don’t give myself the time it takes to do them, so I take advantage of the extra time on the weekends. Right now, I really like using this one as a detox mask.

5. Write in a journal

Sit down with your fancy drink in the morning and take some time to write in a journal. Include anything from highlights from the week to a gratitude list. If it’s your first time using a journal, it’s sometimes helpful to look up a list of writing prompts to get the juices flowing.

6. Start reading a new book

Pick up the book that you’ve been meaning to read for weeks now, find a comfy spot, and read. Put your phone away and just focus on reading for 30 minutes, an hour, or even two hours.

7. Listen to a podcast episode

This is something that I like to add to my walks but it’s also great to do if you’re just sitting outside and relaxing. There are so many episodes filled with information from health, wellness, nutrition, business, and mindset. There are also lots of entertaining ones or true-crime documentaries that are awesome to listen to. Find your favourite and sit back and listen.

8. Take a break from your phone

Put your phone on airplane mode for the day and try not to use it at all. Stay off social media and try to be present for the whole day without any electronic distractions. If you can’t disconnect completely, try just deleting social media apps for the day. It’s amazing what taking a break from social media can do for your mental health.

9. Put on your diffuser

I love using my diffuser every day to purify the air throughout the house. Try out a different essential oil combination for relaxing. Pretty much anything mixed with lavender is a great way to reset and chill out. Check out my Introduction to Essential Oils guide for more tips on what oils to diffuse.

10. Meal prep for the week

One of my favourite forms of self-care is making sure I have healthy options in the fridge for the week. I love to meal prep on the weekends so that I have easy and nutritious lunches for those workdays where you don’t want to take a long lunch break to make a fancy meal. I also like to plan out my meals for the week and make sure we have everything we need to eat healthy all week.

11. Tidy your house

Spend a portion of the day putting things back where they belong throughout the house so you can start the week without any clutter in your space. I find this so helpful, especially in the office, after things have piled up throughout the week. It doesn’t take long to put stuff away and it gives the house a quick refresh.

12. Go to sleep early

End your self-care Sunday by heading to bed nice and early. Leave your phone in another room and try to go to sleep without any distractions.
