With Spring finally arriving and Summer just around the corner, we will all (hopefully) be spending a lot more time outside in the sun. Now, more than ever, it’s especially important to make sure you’re drinking enough water.
How much water do you really need?
How much water you should be drinking on a daily basis is really dependent on your body type, the amount of exercise you’re getting, and the climate that you live in. There really isn’t a magic number that works for everyone but a good rule of thumb would be 8-10 cups daily. If you’re a superstar athlete or outside in the blazing hot sun for hours every day, then I would suggest increasing that number.
Below, I have included five ways to make sure you’re drinking enough water daily!
1. Use a straw
Studies have shown that you will drink more water if you’re drinking from a straw. Stock up on some reusable straws and keep them on hand if this is something that helps you. I especially like these stainless steel straws but you can also get bamboo straws or silicone straws. Figure out which ones you like the best. 🙂
2. Add some flavour
Water doesn’t have to be plain in order for it to count towards your daily intake! You can add some fresh fruit to give it some flavour or even make it as a hot or cold tea. Lemon and lime are great easy ways to add some flavour but you could also add cucumber, berries, mint, or a combination of them all.
Herbal teas can also be a great way to drink more water. I remember a few years back, when I was trying to drink more water and less juice, I would make a giant pitcher of iced herbal tea every morning and drink that throughout the day. Just make sure they are natural, sugar free, and organic, whenever possible.
3. Get an awesome water bottle
Get a water bottle that you’re actually excited to drink out of (sounds silly, but it actually makes a difference) and keep it with you at all times. You can also make a mental note of how many times you should be refilling your water bottle on a daily basis so that way you’re keeping track of how much you’re drinking. A few brands to check out include:
4. Set reminders
Like actual reminders on your phone or throughout the house. There are also a few apps out there that will remind you automatically and allow you to track your water intake. If you have a Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you could set reminders to go off every couple of hours to remind you to have a drink.
You could also take it one step further and get a water bottle that actually tracks it for you! There are water bottles that glow when you haven’t had a sip in awhile and automatically sync to your phone… pretty cool.
5. Plan the night before
Every night, fill your water bottle and place it beside your bed before you go to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, drink as much of it as you can as soon as your feet hit the floor. Your body gets super dehydrated overnight and will thank you for the rehydration first thing in the morning. It’s also a good way to make sure you’re not just starting the day with a coffee, which will dehydrate you even more.
